Childrens department books and resources

Welcome to the fun and exciting department that celebrates kids! Here, we welcome children (ages 0-12) and their families into a world of discovery through books, programs, resources, and so much more.

What We Offer

Programs

We offer a wide variety of programs for children of all ages. We serve babies, toddlers, preschoolers, school age children, and even parents looking for support and guidance.

From art, music, and storytelling to messy science experiments to book clubs for kids, we have it all! Visit our events calendar to see what kind of programs we have available right now.

Safe spaces to play and socialize

The Library has dedicated areas throughout the department for play, reading, and working on various activities. Our play space is a welcoming carpeted area that has a couch, tables, and chairs for your comfort. Kids can check out up to 2 of the popular toy bins during their visit – we have manipulatives, imaginative play, and more. Some department favorites include the food bin (for kitchen play), character bin (from Elsa to Sonic), and the building bricks bin for our Lego lovers!

We also have a large seating area where we see many families enjoying quiet reading time together.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten

1000 Books Before Kindergarten is an excellent starting point for your early readers ages 0-4. Learn more about 1KB4K and see how you can get started today.

Youth Lit Bags

Check out and take home one of our Youth Lit Bags just like you would a book. Each bag contains books, toys, or activities that are centered around a common theme to keep busy minds engaged. These bags are a perfect solution for minimizing costs and clutter while also promoting the importance of play.

Tonies

We’re excited to offer Tonies, a fun and screen-free way for children to enjoy stories, music, and educational content. Each Tonie plays audio content when placed on a Toniebox. They come in different characters and play different stories! It’s perfect for young listeners.

Check out details for Tonies include:

  • 1-week loan period
  • Non-renewable
  • Must be checked out by a Shorewood-Troy Library patron
